The reason behind waking up with a sore jaw and headache

Posted: Updated:

If you wake up with a sore jaw or a headache in the morning, the problem could be your teeth. There is a condition called Bruxism, which means you grind or clench your teeth often at night when you sleep.  It may sound harmless, but it can wear down your teeth so much that other problems kick in...not to mention restless nights.

Many patients don't even know they're doing it until a dentist sees the problem.

Dr. George Michaels said, "I tell my patients basically our teeth are like glass. And with grinding that occurs on a daily basis, it can cause severe damage to teeth, creating stress fractures."

Other symptoms can include tooth pain, jaw soreness, and headaches.  Sometimes managing stress can help the problem, but many benefit by a custom made mouth guard that's worn at night to protect the teeth. If any of these symptoms sound familiar, talk to your dentist.
