New regulations to cover cost of breast pumps for NICU babies

Posted: Updated:

Now the federal government is stepping in to make it easier for some new moms to breast feed their babies in the NICU. New regulations require insurance companies to cover the costs of breast pumps and lactation specialists for babies in intensive care.  That's all part of the affordable care act, which is commonly known as Obama Care.

Wendi Goodson-Celerin, a lactation specialist, said "it's definitely a change for the better. Insurance companies are still working out the details and trying to align vendors and lactation services and how they're going to meet that need for these mothers."

Taxpayers will be footing the bill for the breast pumps, but doctors say that will still be cheaper than buying formula.   Besides, breast milk is healthier for the baby anyway.
