We've heard lots about fast food and obesity. But turns out, that may not be the only health problem that comes from that. A new study of more than 500,000 kids in over 50 countries links fast food to severe asthma, hay fever, and eczema.
Dr. John Sweet said, "It is an enormous survey it is quite impressive and consistent with other surveys that have been done in the past several years." "Asthma, eczema, and hay fever are all results of the body's immune system over reacting to things it should ignore."
Published in the journal, "Thorax," the study said kids who eat fast food three times or more a week had approximately 30% increased risk in the severity of asthma and other allergy problems. It's not that fast food causes asthma, eczema, or hay fever, but the study suggests that a diet heavy in fast food could make these conditions worse.
On the flip-side, researchers found kids with those conditions had less severe symptoms when they ate fruit at least three times a week. Dr. Sweet says it makes since because fruits and vegetables are full of anti-oxidants, which are beneficial. He says maybe kids who fill up with fast food have more trouble because they don't get as much fruit and veggies, which could be key to making them feel better.
