It's being called a modern day medical miracle. On Friday, a baby born at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston was discharged after being born with a third of her heart outside of her chest. Eight babies out of every million are born with this condition. But most are either still born, or die within the first few days of life. So, it's truly amazing that little Audrina Cardenas is defying the odds and going home.
Mom Ashley Cardenas said, "She doesn't have a sternum she doesn't have anything over her heart just a little bit of skin and little muscle." "It's a very, very big step it's been a blessing to finally say we're going home."
This picture before she was born shows her hands circling her tiny heart, which was outside her body. Today her heart is beating just under the skin. So, Audrina wears a protective shield over her chest to guard against injury as her heart grows. It's a milestone today, but baby Audrina will need a few more surgeries as she gets older and stronger. Eventually, doctors will use a portion of her rib bone to build a sternum.
