Overton businesses evacuated due to gas leak, roads closed

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The Lubbock Fire Department has closed University Avenue between Marsha Sharp and Broadway Thursday morning because of a gas leak from a broken gas main.

First responders are also evacuating businesses in the area, including City Bank, FedEx, Starbucks and Plains Capital Bank.

According to Texas Tech spokesperson Chris Cook, Texas Tech has not been affected by the evacuations. They are sending out an alert to students to avoid the area, and they are re-routing student buses.

Officials believe the gas leak is coming from a 6-inch main line and may take a couple of hours to repair. As a safety precaution, LP&L has shut off power to surrounding businesses and residences.

Marinda Heinrich of Atmos Energy says crews are working to repair the damaged pipe while trying to minimize the effect for customers.

Lubbock ISD police are monitoring the situation at nearby Ramirez Elementary School. No evacuations of the school have been ordered at this time.

KCBD has a crew on the scene. We'll bring you updates on NewsChannel 11 at noon.
