LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The verdict is in for Trenard Nunley, the Lubbock man accused of disciplining 3-year-old Jalen Shaw in a tub of scalding hot water.

Nunley, 21, has been found guilty of injury to a child and knowingly causing serious bodily injury. The jury sentenced him to 20 years in prison.

Police say Nunley placed the child in the hot water after a potty training accident. The child suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 35% of his body.

When the forensic specialist took the stand Tuesday, she said during their investigation last year they recorded the water's temperature. She said the thermometer reached 140 degrees Fahrenheit in less than a minute.

Prosecutors say Nunley initially stated that Jalen turned on the hot water and got burned that way. Nunley then confessed that he turned on the water and held Jaylen there for 30 seconds.

On Wednesday, Nunley claimed he lied because he did not want the child's mother, Candace Sanders, to lose her son to CPS.

The jury will now move in to the sentencing phase of the trial. The defense and prosecution will call witnesses to give victim impact statements and then the jury will go into deliberations again to decide his punishment.

During the sentencing phrase of the trial, Corporal Paige Fletcher with LPD testified that upon investigation she found two smoked blunts in the kitchen trash and digital scales on the kitchen table.

Prosecutor Sunshine Stanek told jury on September 28, 2009, Nunley was convicted of having less than 2 ounces of marijuana, a misdemeanor.

Stephanie Nunley testified in defense of her son, calling him a good son and a good family member.

The defense also called a pastor, Samuel King. King says he has known Nunley since he was 5 years old. He said Nunley would come to church regularly while living with his mother and as often as he could after that.
