Cherokee County standoff ends after 6 hours, multiple rounds of tear gas

Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputies went to a home in Cherokee County around 8:30 on Friday morning to pick up a man and take him to a mental health facility. When they arrived at the house, which is west of Jacksonville, they found the man sitting in his house with a shotgun. Deputies backed out of the house and a stand-off ensued.

According to the family living there, the man had gone off his medication for some time. When they became concerned for their own safetys, they called the sheriff's department.

Cherokee County Sheriff James Campbell says the man fired the shotgun several times throughout the day. Officer shot multiple rounds of tear gas into the house, but the man refused to come out. When officers broke a window to fire more tear gas into the residence, the man fired three rounds out of the broken glass.

The Department of Public Safety SWAT team was called to the scene, but just as they were arriving, the man threw his shotgun out the window and surrendered. Texas Rangers also responded.

"The SWAT team showed up and they rushed him and dragged him out of his trailer without hurting him. Then they called us and told us we were all able to come back home," said Jenny Ellis, the suspect's niece.

The suspect was taken to a hospital to make sure he was okay. He will then be taken to a mental health facility. At that point, officials will determine if there will be criminal charges filed against him.

A chief deputy was injured on the scene while trying to throw tear gas into the residence. He twisted his knee, tearing a muscle. He will off work for a while recovering from the injury.
