The Color Run in Lubbock sold out

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

It's crazy, it's colorful and for the first time ever, it's coming to Lubbock!

There is still about a month and a half to go before the festive madness called The Color Run kicks off at Mackenzie Park on March 23rd, but if you haven't signed up already, you may have missed your chance.

Registration for The Color Run opened to the public on January 1st but on February 4th, the event was sold out.

Jessica Nixon, Public Relations Specialist for the Color Run said that the City of Lubbock put a 10,000 person cap on the event due to lack of parking spaces, traffic issues and road closures.

"There are about 3,500 parking spots. And so if we were to invite whoever wants to then there would be no parking left over for anyone," she said.

The Color Run is a national 5k event and the fastest growing event series in the nation. Last year was its first year and there were 600,000 participants nation-wide. Each kilometer of the event is associated with a designated color: yellow, orange, pink, or blue. As the participants reach the color zones, they are doused in what is basically colored food grade cornstarch. The farther you run, the more colors get thrown on you. Part of the proceeds for The Color Run go to the Lubbock IMPACT/TTUHSC Free Clinic - a student-run program that offers medical services to uninsured Lubbock residents.

Nixon said the race director is currently talking with city officials about resolving the problem. They are discussing the possibility of a second race in the afternoon so more people can participate and more money is raised for LUBBOCK IMPACT.

Deputy City Secretary Thomas Harris stated that no city official dealing with The Color Run gave the event a limit on how many people can participate. Harris declined to give an official comment.
