All Slaton ISD campuses were placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon due to a shooting incident that occurred in a neighborhood near Stephen F. Austin Primary School.
Slaton Police Chief Steve Wheeler said that Slaton ISD was placed on lockdown between 1:30 and 2 p.m. after a man was shot on the 200 block of E. Panhandle Street behind the Slaton ISD Administration Building.
"For safety reasons, I did ask the school to do a lockdown just to be on the safe side. At this point we're just trying to get more information, talk to neighbors and see if anyone saw anything," said Wheeler.
The lockdown was lifted at the end of the school day and students were released at the normal time with law enforcement present at each campus. Buses ran normally. Students were encouraged not to walk home but those who had to were supervised, school officials said.
Wheeler said the shooting victim was 26-year-old black male who walked into a nearby house and asked for help. When police arrived, EMS was called and the victim was taken to University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Wheeler said the only description of the suspect authorities have is that he drove off in a black car. The police did not find any shell casings in the area and have not released any names.
