Colder weather could lead to an unexpected medical condition

Posted: Updated:

With this incredible weather system heading toward New England, millions of people are planning their hibernation during the worst of the weather.  But ultimately, the chore most will face is shoveling snow with up to 30 inches of snow expected in some areas along the Northeastern coast.   With that comes a warning this weekend.  We can ignore it here in Texas, but if you have family in the Northeast...cardiologists will tell you it's in the medical books that strenuous snow shoveling can lead to heart attacks in some people with heart disease.  The problem is when patients who don't normally do a lot of exercise…over-do it with short bursts of physical activity, like shoveling snow, and a lot of it. The old temperatures can constrict arteries, compounding the potential for heart problems.
