Free cervical cancer vaccines offered in Australia

Posted: Updated:

For the first time anywhere....12 and 13 year old boys from a high school in Sydney, Australia, have become the first in the world to line up for a free cervical cancer vaccine. They're targeting the boys in Australia for the Gardisil vaccine because males carry the sexually transmitted virus, which can lead to cervical cancer in women. The vaccine can also protect both sexes from other types of cancers. Tanya Plibersek said, "So by vaccinating boys we protect those girls who weren't vaccinated properly, but we also protect boys." The HPV vaccine fights off 70-percent of cervical cancers caused by that infection.
