Can't shake that cough? Eat more fiber!
A new study suggests fiber may help protect the lungs from ailments and also a lot of that phlegmy junk that collects there. The study of 44,000 people finds those who ate the most fiber had the lowest rate of problems like a productive cough.
Fiber-rich foods like apples, pears, and soy products appeared to have the biggest lung protecting benefits. The study is published in the Journal of the American Thoracic Society.
Researchers questioned healthy study participants between the ages of 45 and 74 in Singapore about their dietary habits then followed them for an average of four years. Those who had problems with phlegm during the study period were more likely to be male, to smoke, and to eat the less fiber compared to other people in the study.
