LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Adriana Perez connected on a pair of home runs and Sandy James drove in three runs as Texas Tech cruised past UMKC, 11-3, in five innings Saturday morning at the NMSU Softball Complex.
The win improves Texas Tech (5-3) to 2-1 in the Troy Cox Classic heading into the second game of the day against Penn State.
For the second-straight day, the Red Raiders jumped on UMKC early as Perez launched a three-run blast to left in the first that was immediately followed by a Katelyn Williams solo home run to right field.
Perez finished 2-for-3 with a season-high five RBI as she also connected on a two-run homer in the second. It marked the second-straight game where a Red Raider recorded at least five RBI as James did so as well in Friday afternoon's victory over UMKC.
Even after the strong performance the day before against the Kangaroos (3-4), James found a way to deliver again with a second-inning, bases-loaded double that scored Samantha Camello, Mikey Kenney and Shelby Johnson. James, who snapped the Tech career RBI record Friday afternoon, totaled eight RBI against UMKC over two games.
Sydnie Tapia delivered a pinch-hit two-run single in the third to increase Tech's lead to 11-1 before UMKC plated a pair of runs an inning later. The Red Raiders finished with 10 hits, eight of which that came in the first two innings alone.
Gretchen Aucoin (1-0), making her first collegiate start, picked up her first win as the freshman surrendered just a run off four hits in three innings of work. Shannon Carrico and Chandler Moore pitched the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, to close the game.
Kristen Kelley (1-1), meanwhile, earned the loss as she gave up nine runs, eight of which wera earned, off six hits and three walks before pulled following Perez' home run in the second. Cinda Ramos tossed the final three innings, giving up two runs off four hits in that span.
