Fog and ice snarled traffic across the South Plains overnight Wednesday and Thursday morning.
Emergency crews responded to a 7-car pileup on I-27 south of New Deal early Thursday. Law enforcement shut down southbound lanes and diverted traffic. Minor injuries were reported.
Sergeant Bryan Witt with Department of Public Safety said they responded to a total of 8 accidents overnight and Thursday morning. Several cars crashed on West Loop 289 and the Marsha Sharp Freeway. Police alerted drivers about multiple accidents on West Loop 289 from Frankford through 34th and near 19th street. Accidents were also reported on northbound Loop 289 near the Marsha Sharp Freeway, on the MSF overpass, and at the intersection of the MSF and I-27.
Officer King with LPD said since midnight they have responded to 20-25 accidents. Minor and moderate injuries were reported with UMC reporting 1 person in critical condition.
Both Officer King and Sgt. Witt said the majority of the accidents occurred on overpasses as overpasses and bridges have a higher tendency to freeze over first. Sgt. Witt advised drivers to be careful, check weather conditions before heading out, follow the speed limit and buckle up.
