It almost sounds like the norm, when you hear this is the fifth time it's been done. But what amazing technology that doctors at Brigham and women's hospital in Boston have been able to give a new face to five patients.
Carmen Blandin Tarleton is the latest to receive a full face transplant. She was severely disfigured 6 years ago when her estranged husband doused her with industrial strength lye. She suffered burns over 80-percent of her body.
Earlier this month, a team of doctors and nurses transplanted donor skin to Carmen's face and neck, also giving her a nose, lips, muscles, arteries and nerves. The surgery took 15 hours. Doctors say Carmen is recovering well, although it may take a year or more to regain a majority of movement and expression in her face.
