49 year old Walt Bush works for the Lubbock sheriff's office. But instead of his day job, he is doing a little modeling, to show off his double hip replacement that is, just two weeks after surgery.
His procedure used a new technique in hip replacement surgery, which brings less pain and faster recovery. Dr. David Shephard with Lubbock sports medicine explains why.
"The direct anterior hip approach utilizes the between muscles so that we do not have to cut through any muscles and we do not have to detach any muscles from the bone in order to perform the procedure."
Dr. Shephard says the only patients who would not qualify for this technique would be those who are extremely obese, or have advanced deformities from arthritis.
But for most, this provides a new approach to hip replacement without the traditional cutting to get to the hip.
