8-year-old Idalou boy dies in go-cart crash

IDALOU, TX (KCBD) -

Friends and family are mourning the loss of a young Idalou boy after a tragic go-cart crash Thursday afternoon. Eight-year-old Elijah Urrutia died just before 5 p.m. at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock.

According to police, the accident occurred at the corner of east 4th and Pecan Sts. in Idalou. Urrutia was riding in the passenger seat of a go-cart that police say was not street legal. The 19-year-old driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control and flipped into a ditch.

Idalou Police Chief Albert Garcia says Urrutia was taken to Covenant with traumatic head injuries. The driver was injured but was treated at the scene.

There will be a car wash to raise funds for Elijah Urrutia Saturday at 2J's THRIFTWAY in Idalou starting at 1 p.m. and on Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the old Lacks building on Ave Q in Lubbock.

A fund has been set up in Memory of Elijah at Vista Bank.
