Rabies transplant

Posted: Updated:

Disturbing news that a lifesaving surgery of over a year ago is to blame for the death of a patient who contracted rabies.

Experts at the CDC say cases like this are extremely rare. The organ donor died in 2011 in Florida, but rabies wasn't suspected at that time.

Immediately after death, the person's organs were sent to four people in Florida, Georgia, Illinois and Maryland.

Now that one recipient has died of the rabies virus, the other three are currently being treated with anti-rabies shots.

The donor apparently came in contact with a raccoon that had been infected, although other animals carry the virus as well.
