A Lubbock woman has been charged with manslaughter months after a moped accident killed a Slaton man.
Back in December, 53-year old Dirk Zieher was killed while riding his moped on US 84. DPS officials believe 41-year old Staci Kirk was responsible. She is being charged with manslaughter and failing to stop and render aid.
According to the arrest warrant, the lack of evidence found at the scene on Dec. 6 caused investigators to believe it was a one-vehicle accident. However, when they took a closer look, they realized someone else had to be involved.
Zieher's moped only traveled around 45 MPH. Investigators determined that he was hit from behind. They also found white paint and small plastics at the scene. DPS was able to track those pieces back to a white Hummer H2.
Days after the accident, officers in the area were on the lookout for a vehicle with that description and pulled Kirk over for DWI. She was driving a white 2005 Hummer.
The arrest warrant says the next day, when DPS investigators went to find the vehicle, they were told it was being hidden at a body shop and that's exactly where DPS found a wrecked, 2005 white Hummer H2. The warrant states that lab tests were done and it was decided that the damage on the Hummer was consistent with what was found on Zieher's moped.
DPS continued the investigation over the next couple of months and with the help of a tipster, investigators now believe Kirk was driving under the influence when she hit Zieher from behind and fled the scene. The tipster also told Troopers that she had blacked out prior to impact.
Kirk was arrested on Monday and was held in the Lubbock County Jail on a $25,000 bond. She was released on Thursday.
