Last November, KCBD aired a story about a Lubbock mom planning a campaign against synthetic drugs. And Gina Johnson took her fight straight to city hall.
Well, that story stirred concern throughout the community and support for Mrs. Johnson's cause. Four months later, a city-wide ban is in place and being enforced.
Now, dangerous synthetic drugs once available in most corner smoke shops are much harder for anyone around here to get.
Consider this:
I supported asking council to pass the ban from the beginning. But I'll admit, I had my doubts that it could be enforced.
Well not anymore. Just since last weekend, Lubbock Police have issued dozens of citations and seized thousands of dollars worth of these synthetic drug products.
This is a good example of how city leaders can work with their citizens to accomplish something meaningful.
So, thank you to Gina Johnson for sharing your story. Thanks to Lubbock City Council for listening. And thanks to the Lubbock Police Department for following through.
