This was a small study involving just 5 adult patients with acute leukemia, but researchers are excited and say the results are very promising.
The study at memorial sloan-kettering cancer center found some success after chemo had failed in all of them. Instead, they genetically altered the patients' own immune cells. It worked in three of the patients who've been in remission from 5 months to two years.
Doctors said they were amazed at how quickly it seemed to work, practically reversing one of the patient's diseases within a week.
Again, this was a small study, but offers promise as bigger studies will follow.
