Area middle schools play in Wooden Bat Tourney

PLAINS, GA (WALB) -

Several area middle school baseball players are getting the chance to swing it like the pros on the same field our 39th President used to play ball.

Four middle school teams, Americus-Sumter, Webster Co. Quitman Co., and Macon Co. are all playing in the Peanut Classic Wooden Bat Tournament at the Jimmy Carter National Site in Plains.

For many of these kids, it's their first time ever playing with a wood bat, and they get to do it on the same field Jimmy Carter played years ago.

"President Carter used to play baseball. And that's basically our tie here," says park guide Ian Pierson. "This was a high school. They had a baseball team, and they wanted to bring that back, and we had interest from local teams, and we were able to put it together, and bring people out there for more than just the history."

The round-robin tournament continues Saturday. The first game starts at 9 a.m.
