NEW DEAL, TX (KCBD) -

Hazmat was called to the scene of a semi-truck accident on I-27 near New Deal Monday afternoon.

According to Department of Public Safety, around 4:00 p.m. a Battery Solutions semi-truck was traveling southbound on I-27 when the driver drove off an overpass between the north and south lanes. The semi landed under the overpass on its side, trapping the driver.

Though we know Aerocare transported the driver to the hospital, we don't know the state of his injuries at this time. Officials report that he was talking to emergency crews before he was airlifted to the hospital.

The Wolfforth Hazmat team and a clean up crew from Odessa responded to the scene as the semi-truck was leaking fuel and battery acid. New Deal firefighters reported that the battery acid did enough damage to their gear that they will have to purchase a significant amount of new equipment.

Crews finally left the scene of the accident around 8:00 p.m.
