New research suggests a common treatment for diabetes may damage the pancreas.
Doctors studied the pancreas in deceased organ donors who took the drugs januvia or byetta to lower blood sugar, as well as those who took other diabetes medications. They found those who took januvia and byetta were more likely to have an enlarged pancreas, abnormal cells, and some even developed a tumor.
So now, the drugs are under investigation by the FDA for their possible links to pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.
