Wisdom teeth break through

Posted: Updated:

A majority of people have at least one impacted wisdom tooth that ultimately needs to be surgically removed. Now a new study shows a common pediatric procedure may prevent wisdom teeth from developing all together.

Wisdom teeth do not begin to develop until well after birth, making them vulnerable to injury. Researchers at Tufts University studied the dental x-rays of two to six-year-olds who had received local dental anesthesia, and compared them to children who had not. They found those who had received anesthesia were four times more likely to have missing wisdom tooth buds.

Researchers say more studies are needed, but this could lead to a new treatment to prevent wisdom tooth development.
