COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

After weeks sitting atop ESPN's Best of the Best poll like a Medieval king fighting back lesser armies, Jadeveon Clowney's reign has come to an end – not by the French or the English, but by a Husker.

The 45-time champion of the SportsCenter poll finally fell Monday afternoon to a very worthy opponent: 7-year-old Jack Hoffman, a cancer patient who was given the rare opportunity to play in Nebraska's spring game.

Hoffman, a young Cornhusker fan, survived a risky brain operation to remove the golf-ball sized tumor from his brain stem.

Hoffman's family struck up a friendship with former Husker running back Rex Burkhead, who managed to connect the little fan with the rest of the team.

Before last Saturday's spring game, the Huskers called up Hoffman and asked him if he wanted to suit up and score at the game. And so he did.

Lined up in the backfield as a running back and wearing Burkhead's No. 22 jersey, Hoffman ran 69 yards for a touchdown.

While it's not a devastating, game-changing hit like the one Clowney laid to Michigan Wolverines running back Vincent Smith, it is the kind of play that causes all of us to pause and remember football as just a game compared to the fragility of life.

All hail King Hoffman.
