Scientists have identified a gene that may double the risk for Alzheimer's disease in African Americans.
The study, conducted by The Columbia University Medical Center, involved nearly 6,000 African-American participants and one-third of those studied had been diagnosed with probable Alzheimer's.
Researchers found the genetic variant is a major player in the development of the disease and until now, research in the African-American community had been limited.
Transforming the new knowledge into a useful screening tool is still years away and will require confirmation in future studies.
