It's estimated that at some point, more than 80% of the population will suffer from back pain. Though heat has long been used to kill damaged nerves and bring relief to chronic back pain, it's been difficult to reach specific nerves in a bulging disc. But experts have now found a way they say is effective in healing nerves in a bulging disc.
It's called the IDET, which stands for intra-discal electro-thermal therapy. Dr. Johnny Qubty, a pain specialist, says this method should be a last resort for patients who have tried more conventional methods such as physical therapy, chiropractic therapy or steroid injections.
Dr. Qubty says the IDET catheter can provide pain relief for 5 or 6 years or longer, depending on nerve growth.
IDET is not covered by insurance, but Dr. Qubty says it can be more affordable than other surgical options.
