Performing Arts Association reveals plans for $85 million venue

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The stage lights are about to get a little brighter here in Lubbock. After two years of research, the Lubbock Entertainment and Performing Arts Association has conceived a plan for a 2,000 seat, state-of-the-art performing arts center in Lubbock. Tim Collins, Arts Association president, says this project is long overdue.

"For 20 years we've had a wish for a new performing arts center. I think there's a tremendous need and we found that it was very viable," Collins said.

The research was conducted by Garfield Traub Development, LLC and president Steve Moffett says this new facility will take Lubbock to the next level.

"You've had Broadway come here, you've had an orchestra, you've had a ballet, you just don't have the right facilities. You have venues, but not the right venues and when you get all the right venues, all of a sudden you will have interest from all the shows," Moffett said.

The City Bank Auditorium is currently hosts the bulk of Lubbock's performances, but it is in serious need of a makeover. The $85 million price tag for this new project will mean that no corners will be cut. However, the end result could be worth it.

According to Collins, the project will feed $157 million from construction plus an estimated $3.7 million from ticket sales into the Lubbock economy.

The soon-to-be-former DPS building will be torn down to make way for this new facility and the Lubbock Entertainment and Performing Arts Association is seeking to raise all the money privately.

"Some private citizens have taken the bull by the horns themselves. We're looking to garner grants from other foundations. We'll be looking to see what people want to be a part of the development," Collins said.

Construction could begin as soon as May of 2014 and not long after, Broadway, ballet and everything in between will begin to light up Lubbock's new stage.
