New cancer weapon

Posted: Updated:

There is a new weapon in the fight against cancer. The University of Alabama has obtained a cyclotron which is a 30-ton piece of cancer equipment.

The cyclotron is the most powerful in an academic medical center in the US and it will move protons along a spiral path at about 16% the speed of light to strike a specific target.

The cyclotron gives doctors "the ability to know whether or not a drug is working much quicker than they normally do." According to Ed Partridge, the Director of the University of Alabama Cancer Center, it also gives them the ability to actually whether the drug is hitting the targeted area.

In addition to cancer treatment, this $20 million device will also be used for cancer research, cardiology and the neurosciences.
