Paramedic hit by car while responding to accident

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

A two-car accident turned into a five-car accident and sent a local paramedic to the intensive-care unit on Sunday afternoon.

It happened just after 4 p.m. off Highway 114, east of Lubbock.

Jason Cook, an off-duty UMC paramedic, stopped and got out of his car to assist with a two-car accident.

But when Cook stepped out of his car, another vehicle hit him, sending Cook into surgery for serious injuries.

Cook is recovering from a head injury, broken ribs, a broken pelvis, and a broken ankle.

Another person was taken to UMC, and two others to Covenant in Levelland for treatment.

Authorities say Cook was on his way back to Shallowater with his family.

As of Sunday night, Cook remains in serious condition at UMC.
