Researchers reduce pain by freezing nerves

Posted: Updated:

Scientists are using the deep freeze to help relieve deep pain.

The procedure, called cryoneurolysis, uses a probe to cool down a nerve to 3 degrees Fahrenheit.

Scientists at Stoneybrook University School of Medicine have found that the procedure relieves chronic pain associated with nerve damage due to diabetes or traumatic injury.

This is a small study so far, with only about two dozen patients, but experts say this has the potential to replace or at least complement pain medications.

This study was led by researchers at Stony Brook University School of Medicine (NY) and presented at the annual meeting of the Society of Interventional Radiology.
