Tuesday, a Shallowater teen was killed in a truck rollover in northwest Lubbock.
Around 4:20 p.m., 16-year-old Loran Coats was driving southbound on FM 179 near FM 2641 when troopers say she overcorrected her truck, causing it to roll. The impact ejected Coats from the vehicle. "For some unknown reason the driver jerked the steering wheel to the right, overcorrected and went into a side skid rolling into the west ditch," Sergeant Bryan Witt with DPS said.
Aerocare arrived on the scene and took Coats to Covenant where she was pronounced dead soon after.
Coats was a junior at Shallowater High School, and her principal Tom Johnson says the school district is in shock. "We are very saddened," Johnson said. "All our prayers are going out to her family, and we hope they can find comfort."
Johnson says Coats was heavily involved in school activities including band, flags and the golf team.
Johnson says counselors have already been notified to help students throughout the school day tomorrow.
Police are still investigating the accident.
