The FDA announced it will not approve any generic versions of the popular painkiller Oxycontin.
The intent is to lower the rate of abuse but the bad side is for those who truly need the drug, the price will likely go up.
Because the tablets are slow-release, abusers will crush the pills to get the effects of an entire dose at once. But in 2010, the manufacturers of Oxycontin introduced a new formulation of the pill that cannot be crushed and turns into a jelly like substance instead.
Since the FDA says this new formulation safeguards against abuse, generic Oxycontin will no longer be available.
