(RNN) – The Boston Marathon bombing suspect is awake and responding to questions from law enforcement.

USA Today reports Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is writing answers to questions on a piece of paper.

Tsarnaev is listed in serious condition and under guard at Beth-Israel Deaconness Medical Center.

His older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was pronounced dead at the same hospital after a shootout with police early Friday in Watertown, MA. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev backed an SUV over his older brother as he fled the scene, possibly inflicting the wounds that killed him. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev remained at large for hours before he was captured Friday evening after a massive manhunt.

A special interrogation team for high-value suspects planned to question Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, The Associated Press reported earlier.

The Tsarnaev brothers are suspected of placing two bombs at the Boston Marathon on Monday where three people died and more than 170 suffered injuries. The bombs were homemade, manufactured using pressure cookers containing ball bearings and other metal shrapnel.

The motive in the terror attack remains a mystery.
