Llano Estacado Audubon Society Holds Prairie Festival

Prairie dogs and burrowing owls are all part of the South Plains' prairie ecosystem, but what exactly is that?

That's what the Llano Estacado Audubon Society wants to help you understand. On Saturday, the first ever Prairie Festival was held at the Municipal Garden and Arts Center. Organizers are hoping that this event will help people understand and appreciate the importance of a prairie and all the species of animals and plants associated with it.

"We just want people to understand that what prairie is left is precious and to understand and appreciate it when they see it," says Jill Haukous, co-director of the Prairie Festival.

The festival will feature field trips to several sites around Lubbock on Sunday to view the prairie and its inhabitants.
