I couldn't help but have a disturbing thought as I filed my taxes last Monday.
It occurred to me just how uninformed and uninvolved most of us are with the very government we pay for.
Think about it, for the thousands of dollars we pay every year for our government to run, we really are, for the most part, disengaged.
Just look at the numbers. On average, only 10% of registered voters actually show up at the polls, much less attend a town hall meeting or write a letter to a congressman.
It's too bad that most of us think the money deducted from our paycheck isn't even our money to begin with. There's this feeling that we only earn what we take home.
And in most cases, that's about 75% of our gross pay.
Maybe we would all be a little more interested and involved if the "payroll tax" system was done away with and we had to write one big check to the government every month or even every year.
Then maybe we'd pay more attention to what we are getting for our money.
