Westover's Black signs with Georgia Southern

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

He is one of the best centerfielders in Georgia high school baseball. Now he'll be roaming the outfield in Statesboro.

Westover's Josh Black signed his letter of intent Wednesday to play at Georgia Southern next season.

WHS Head Baseball Coach Kevin Fretwell believes Black may be the first Patriot to ever sign a Division One baseball scholarship

The senior is hitting .636 and slugging an incredible .752 for the Patriots this season, but Black says he believes that's only part of the reason the Eagles wanted him in their outfield, and says it just seemed to be the right fit for him.

"I was a fast outfielder and they liked that I was the only left handed batter they would have throwing with my right hand," Black says. "They treat all their kids like they are their own, and I really love that. All the players on the team, they make you feel like you're at home."

Black believes he could play often as a freshman, and plans to major in sports medicine.
