No. 7 Texas spoils Senior Day with series-clinching win

LUBBOCK, Texas – Taylor Hoagland connected on two solo home runs and Kim Bruins tossed a four-hit complete game to lead No. 7 Texas to a series-clinching 4-1 victory over Texas Tech Saturday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.

The loss marked the eighth straight at home for the Red Raiders (29-23; 3-11), who stranded six runners on base, including three during the final two innings alone. Texas improved to 41-6 on the year and 11-2 in Big 12 Conference play.

"Texas gave us several opportunities today and we didn't capitalize," Tech head coach Shanon Hays said. "That's kind of been our problem this year. We leave too many runners on base and don't strike when we need to. I thought we got great pitching today in the circle but we just didn't have the runs to back them up and that was disappointing."

Hoagland homered to lead off the first and then added another solo shot with one out in the third that broke up a 1-1 tie. It was her 12th and 13th home runs of the year, which marked just the eighth time this year Tech had allowed multiple long balls to an opponent.

Mikey Kenney followed Hoagland's home run in the first with a solo shot of her own that tied the game. The home run was Kenney's 12th of the season and 44th of her career, moving the senior into a tie for 10th all-time in Big 12 history.

Texas broke the game open in the sixth as Mandy Ogle drove a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Brejae Washington. Ogle later scored off a Tech throwing error that would have ended the inning.

Bruins (9-0), meanwhile, totaled four of her five strikeouts in the final two innings to prevent the Red Raiders from rallying. Tech was able to bring the tying run to the plate with two runners on in the seventh but Bruins struck out Shelby Johnson to close the game.

Gretchen Aucoin (6-3) took the loss for the Red Raiders in a valiant effort as the freshman surrendered three runs off six hits while striking out four in her five innings of work. She was relieved by Cara Custer, who got Tech out of the sixth, before Brittany Talley worked a scoreless seventh.

Following the game, Tech honored its five seniors – Ashley Brokeshoulder, Emily Cooper, Sandy James, Adriana Perez and Kenney – as part of its Senior Day ceremonies. The senior class was honored in front of 932 fans, the second-largest crowd in Rocky Johnson Field history.

The Red Raiders will look to salvage the series Sunday afternoon with a 12 p.m. first pitch.
