Sexual assault victims granted control in reporting crime

Posted: Updated:

According to the Department of Justice, someone is sexually assaulted in this country every 90 seconds before the age of 18. It happens to 1 in 4 girls and to 1 in 6 boys.

April was Sexual Assault Awareness Month and even though it's the start of a new month, the awareness campaign continues with a new focus on what to teach our children.

Many people are not aware that a few years ago, congress passed a law allowing the victim in a sexual assault case to decide if they want to report it. In other words, you can go to the emergency room after an assault and get the medical treatment you need, and they will keep the evidence for two years, allowing you that long to decide if you want to turn it over to the police.

The number for the Lubbock Rape Crisis Center is 763-7273.
