Gamecocks fall to Vanderbilt in series opener

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Ninth-ranked South Carolina fell 3-2 to top ranked Vanderbilt Friday night at Carolina Stadium in game one of a three-game SEC series. 

The Gamecocks are 33-13 overall, 13-9 in the SEC, while the Commodores improve to 40-6 on the season and 20-2 in the conference.

Commodore pitcher Kevin Ziomek earned the win and improved to 9-2 on the season. He pitched eight innings and allowed one run on eight hits.  He had four strikeouts and no walks.

South Carolina starter Nolan Belcher suffered the loss and is now 6-5 on the year.  He allowed three runs on six hits in six innings.  He posted six strikeouts and one walk.

South Carolina had nine hits with Vanderbilt finishing with eight in the contest.  Joey Pankake and LB Dantzler both had two hits to lead the Gamecocks. 

The series continues Saturday with game two at noon.

Florida (42-15) plays Saturday against the winner of Friday night's game between Mississippi State (36-23) and Arkansas.

    The Auburn baseball team was eliminated from the Southeastern Conference baseball tournament, falling to Arkansas 11-0 in seven innings at the Hoover Met Thursday.  The Razorbacks improved to 40-16 while the Tigers fell to 35-24.
