Covenant recognizes World Asthma Day

World Asthma Day is on Tuesday, May 7. This is a day is organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma and is dedicated to bringing awareness of asthma and improving asthma care around the world. Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases, with an estimated 300 million individuals affected worldwide. Laura Valdez, a pediatric asthma coordinator at Covenant Health warns to watch for symptoms of asthma. She also provided tips to keep asthma under control if you or a loved one has already been diagnosed with asthma.

Symptoms of asthma include:

  • Cough
  • Wheeze
  • Tight chest
  • Waking up at night
  • Can't do all usual activities
  • If skin color changes or lips turn blue call 911

Tips if you have asthma:

  • Take daily controller medication (even if you feel good)
  • Avoid triggers
  • Watch for early warning signs; if you start treating with quick reliever medication at early warning signs it will keep symptoms from getting progressively worse.
