Health officials worried about CRE superbug

Posted: Updated:

A dangerous infection known as c-diff has been around for a while, but now, health officials are worried about another silent threat lurking in hospitals and nursing homes.

This so-called superbug is called CRE and doctors say it is nearly impossible to treat.

"CRE stands for carbopenemaise resistant enterobacterioacea and what that means is it's not just one germ it's a family of germs that are causing the problem," said Dr. Frank Esper with the infectious disease center.

Already, some potent antibiotics don't work against CRE since people have built an immune response to it by taking repeated antibiotics, even when they're not needed.
