Gamecocks open series with win over Georgia

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

12th-ranked South Carolina beat Georgia 7-2 Friday night to open the weekend series at Carolina Stadium. The Gamecocks are 35-14 and 14-10 in the SEC with Georgia 18-29 and 5-17 in league play.

Senior left-hander Nolan Belcher limited Georgia to two runs on five hits in 7.1 innings.  Belcher earned the win and is now 7-5 on the year.  He struck out eight batters and walked none and at one point in the game, he retired 16 straight batters from the first inning to the sixth inning.

Georgia starting pitcher Sean McLaughlin suffered the loss and is now 4-6 for the season.  He allowed four runs on six hits in three innings of work.

South Carolina had eight hits with Georgia finishing with seven.  Grayson Greiner went 3-for-4 with two runs with Max Schrock 2-for-5. LB Dantzler also scored two runs in the contest.  Ward went 2-for-4 to lead Georgia at the plate.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday. Saturday is also Senior Day with the Gamecocks honoring nine seniors before the contest.  Pregame festivities will begin at 12:40 p.m.

    Deacon Liput had two hits and four RBIs during Florida's 11-run rally in the eighth inning and the Gators beat Mississippi State 12-3 Friday to reach the Southeastern Conference tournament semifinals. Florida (42-15) plays Saturday against the winner of Friday night's game between Mississippi State (36-23) and Arkansas.

    The Auburn baseball team was eliminated from the Southeastern Conference baseball tournament, falling to Arkansas 11-0 in seven innings at the Hoover Met Thursday.  The Razorbacks improved to 40-16 while the Tigers fell to 35-24.
