LUBBOCK – Some people consider themselves entitled and live a life of mediocrity. Others overcome great obstacles, take significant risk, and change the world.
Dr. Ben Carson was raised by a Godly woman who, despite her illiteracy and her battle with depression, taught him to choose the road less traveled. Though she could not read herself, she required her sons to read one book per week and write a report over each one.
Challenged by dire poverty, poor grades, a horrible temper and low self-esteem, Carson persevered and overcame his own early struggles in life by the grace of God. Dr. Carson went on to become a world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon, successfully separating numerous conjoined twins in highly publicized cases spanning the globe.
In 2008, President George W. Bush awarded Carson the highest civilian honor – the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He has also been awarded over 60 honorary doctorates.
On February 7, 2009, Dr. Carson's compelling life story was portrayed by Cuba Gooding, Jr. in the critically acclaimed movie Gifted Hands.
His book, America the Beautiful…Rediscovering What Made this Country Great, and phenomenal speech at CPAC "Economics is Not Brain Surgery" thrust Dr. Ben Carson into the political arena, energizing conservatives across the country.
Carson has been married for over 37 years to his wife, Candy, and is the father of three sons. His mother, Sonya Carson, who made all of this possible, has been blessed to watch it all unfold.
