We know too much salt puts us at risk of high blood pressure and heart disease, but a new report from the Institute of Medicine finds too little salt may pose health risks as well.
It's not a big concern since Americans are consuming an average of 3,400 milligrams of sodium per day - one third more than what's recommended.
But, for those who are conscientious and trying to cut out salt, the institute finds no benefit and even some potential risks by lowering sodium below the recommended 2,300 milligrams a day.
