Cougars' run comes to an end in semis

CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

Crisp County head coach Bill Pate called this year's Cougars baseball team the most special he's ever coached.  It's just a shame the year couldn't end on a better note.  The Cougars were swept by Marist 6-3,2-1 in the AAAA state semi-finals in Cordele Monday night.  

The War Eagles jumped out on the Cougars in game one with a strong first inning.  Crisp was able to put a short rally together in the 7th inning of game one but dropped a 3 run contest.

In game two, the Cougars' senior ace Robert Tyler took the mound and had control until the 3rd inning when he hit a Marist batter with the bases loaded to plate the first run of the game.  The War Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning.

Crisp County fought back in the 6th inning when Taylor Walls hit a grounder to short with a runner at third.  Marist tried to turn a double play but Walls beat the throw to first allowing Devin Taylor to score.  Taylor made it a 2-1 game.

In the 7th, as Crisp was down to its final three outs, Robert Tyler awoke the crowd with a lead off base hit to right. But Witt Campbell was unable to keep the rally going and struck out to end the game.  

It was an emotional ending for what was a great season for the Cougars who was in search of its first state title since 1961.

Head coach Bill Pate said "We're so proud of these guys. They've worked so hard. They've become so close.  This is the greatest group of kids I've ever been around in my life.  We're all like family.  It is very heart breaking tonight."

Senior pitcher Robert Tyler said "It just tears me up inside I guess but we all have to move on.  We're moving on to bigger and better things.  I hope the upper classmen learn from this tonight so they can step up next year and do what they have to do." 

The Cougars will lose only three seniors from this year's team
