Tech men's basketball selected to play in Legend's Classic

From Texas Tech Athletics:

Texas Tech is one of four schools selected to participate in the Championship Rounds of the Legends Classic men's collegiate basketball tournament, which returns to Brooklyn's Barclays Center for the second consecutive year.

Highlighting the field for the seventh annual Legends Classic are Pittsburgh, Stanford, Texas Tech, and Houston. These four teams, with a combined 73 NCAA Tournament appearances among them, will each host a pair of regional round games on campus from Nov. 17-21 before facing off at Barclays Center in the Championship Rounds on Nov. 25 & 26. The remainder of the eight-team field will participate in subregionals held at a campus site.

Texas Tech is making its second appearance in the event. The Red Raiders participated in the 2008 edition of the tournament at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. That season, Texas Tech defeated Eastern Kentucky (98-84) and East Central (167-115) in Lubbock, before falling to No. 4 Pittsburgh, 80-67, in the semifinals in Newark. The Red Raiders rebounded to upend Mississippi State, 77-73 in the consolation game.

Texas Tech – The Red Raiders are under the direction of first-year head coach Tubby Smith, who has 511 wins and 17 NCAA appearances under his belt...Smith inherits a roster that returns 10 players from a year ago, led by senior forward Jaye Crockett, who posted team highs of 11.9 ppg and 6.5 rpg ... also back is junior frontcourt player Jordan Tolbert, who averaged 9.9 points and 5.5 rebounds a game ... Texas Tech has participated in 14 NCAA Tournaments.

Pittsburgh – 2013 marked the 24th NCAA Tournament appearance by the Panthers, including 11 bids in the last 12 years...Pitt ended its Big East membership with the league's best record over the last dozen years (141-63, .691)...head coach Jamie Dixon sees the return of three starters and six of last season's top 10 scorers as Pitt enters its first year as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference...senior swingman Lamar Patterson (10.0 ppg, 94 assists) and sophomore point guard James Robinson (6.1 ppg, 116 assists) headline the returnees...the Panthers were 24-9 in 2012-13.

Stanford – The Cardinal advanced to the NIT for the second consecutive season in posting a 19-15 record ... head coach Johnny Dawkins will welcome back 14 players from last year's squad, including eight of his top nine scorers ... leading the way are senior forward Dwight Powell and junior guard Chasson Randle ... Powell led the Cardinal in scoring (14.9 ppg) and rebounding (8.2 rpg), while Randle netted 13.6 ppg and handed out 89 assists ... Stanford has been to 16 NCAA Tournaments.

Houston – Head coach James Dickey guided the Cougars to a 20-13 mark, the first 20-win season since the 2008-09 campaign, and the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational ... first-team Conference USA selection junior TaShawn Thomas (16.9 ppg, 9.8 rpg) leads a team that returns all but two players from a year ago ... junior guard Joseph Young paced Houston with his 18.0 ppg average last season ... the Cougars have been to 19 NCAA Tournaments and five Final Fours ... Houston will begin its association with the American Athletic Conference in 2013-14.

Matchups for the Championship Rounds, which will be aired on ESPN Networks, as well as the entire bracket for the 2013 Legends Classic, will be announced at a later date.

A year ago, No. 1 Indiana needed overtime to defeat Georgetown, 82-72, in the championship game of the Legends Classic. In a contest that saw 11 lead changes and six ties, the Hoyas outscored Indiana 8-1 in the final 1:04 of regulation to send the game into overtime on Otto Porter's lay-up with six seconds left. However, Hoosier Jordan Hulls scored six of his team-high 17 points in overtime to earn tournament MVP honors.
