Historic season for Frenship softball

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Frenship softball is in uncharted territory. For the first time in program history, the Lady Tigers will be playing in the regional finals against Aledo at Abilene Christian University, this Friday and Saturday.

Never before has Frenship been this close to punching its ticket to state.

"This year we've really come together as a team," Junior first baseman Cydney Turner said. "Not only are we really skilled but being able to come together has really helped us a lot."

"Talent wise we may not be as strong as some of the teams I've had in the past," coach Robby Dickenson said. "But they just never quit, they won't accept getting beat. I've described them all year long as being really scrappy. They're a joy to be with."

The Lady Tigers swept Birdville in the regional semifinals to advance to this weekends games. The sweep was great, but beating Birdville—the team who eliminated Frenship a season ago—was even better.

"That was really cool," Sophomore right fielder Adrianna Chavez said. "They beat us out last year and we wanted revenge and to beat them really bad."

"We beat a quality opponent," Dickenson said. "We're right on target with our goals and we hope to win one more and play in Austin and win more there."

In order to get to Austin, the Lady Tigers first have to beat Aledo. Easier said than done as the Bearcats have yet to lose this postseason.

"They're well coached," Dickenson said. "They normally have a real good program up there and its going to be a challenge, but of course, it should be. When you get to the regional finals whoever is left is supposed to be good."

Game times for the regional final at Abilene Christian University is 7 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday. Game three if necessary will be a half hour after the conclusion of game two.
