Former Texas Tech basketball forward charged with murder

FULTON COUNTY, GA (KCBD) -

An NBC affiliate in the Bay Area is reporting that a former Texas Tech basketball player has been charged with the murder of a Georgia rapper named Lil Phat, real name Melvin Vernell.

Decensae White, 25, played forward for Bobby Knight in the 2006-2007 season. He was roommates with Michael Crabtree for a short time until he transferred to Santa Clara in January 2008.

White played basketball at San Francisco State University but officials tell us he was extradited to Atlanta last Friday.

Vernell was found shot dead outside an Atlanta hospital in June of last year. Vernell was visiting his girlfriend.

White is currently behind bars in Fulton County, GA. The exact circumstances of the crime and the details of White's involvement are not yet known.
